Alfonso, an Areca Palm, Chrysalidocarpus Lutescens, Dypsis Lutescens, Butterfly Palm, Yellow Palm, or Golden Cane, has to be one of the most well-known palms on the planet! It's easy to see why; Alfonso has fronds that arch beautifully, and the older he gets, the more graceful he becomes.
Believe it or not, Alfonso is one of the best plants to help relieve dry skin during winter. How we hear you ask? Well, as a particularly thirsty plant, he transpires a lot of water, which essentially makes him a humidifier! If that wasn't enough, NASA lists him as one of the best air-purifying plants.
Native to Madagascar, Alfonso is also pet-freindly. What's not to like?
Alfonso, Areca Palm
Alfonso prefers bright indirect light without prolonged exposure to direct sun - a touch of morning sunlight wouldn’t go a miss. Kenny doesn’t mind a touch of shade, but he’ll do best near a window.
If you’re not sure what level of light you have, check the shadows cast by your plant:
- Minimal shadow = lower light
- Half shadow = indirect light
- Full shadow = direct sun
